School Outfits: 12 Cute Fall and Winter Looks to Copy

Good school outfits have to survive three things: a cold walk to the bus, a classroom heated like a greenhouse, and hours in a plastic chair. The twelve outfits for school below manage all three, and they're built from pieces most high school and college students already own, in preppy, casual, sporty and cozy versions that pass a typical dress code.

Fall Outfits for School, September to November

Every look here has a layer that comes off by lunch.

Fall mornings start cold and afternoons don't, so each outfit has a top layer you can take off and a base that still looks finished without it. For more seasonal combinations outside school, see our fall outfit ideas for 2026.

1. Cardigan, striped tee and straight jeans

A navy or cream cardigan over a striped long-sleeve tee, mid-wash straight jeans and white sneakers. Fasten just the middle button so it sits close without pulling, or button it all the way and wear it as the top on warmer afternoons. It's the default outfit for any high school without a strict code, and it's very hard to get wrong. The cardigan outfits guide has twenty more ways to wear one.

2. Sweater vest, collared shirt and a pleated skirt

A cable-knit sweater vest over a white collared shirt, a knee-length pleated skirt in navy or plaid, crew socks and loafers or clean sneakers. Bike shorts under the skirt make stairs, bleachers and sitting on the gym floor a non-issue. This is the preppy one, and it's the closest thing to a uniform that still looks like your own choice.

3. Flannel shirt, plain tee and relaxed jeans

An open flannel over a plain white or grey tee, relaxed straight jeans and canvas or skate sneakers. Keep the tee fitted enough that the flannel hangs over it instead of bunching at the waist. For guys it's the easiest school outfit there is: when the room warms up, the flannel ties around your waist or goes in the backpack. How the wash and cut of your jeans change the look is covered in what to wear with jeans.

4. Crewneck sweatshirt and straight-leg sweatpants

A plain crewneck in grey, navy or sage, sweatpants in the same color family with a straight or wide leg, white socks and clean sneakers. The cut is what separates this from pajamas: a leg that falls to the shoe, not a stretched cuff bunched at the ankle. It's the sporty pick for test days, long bus rides and anything with practice right after the last bell.

5. Rugby shirt, black jeans and chunky sneakers

A striped rugby shirt with a white collar, black straight jeans and chunky sneakers or skate shoes. The collar adds a preppy edge without a button-down, and black denim hides a full day of wear better than a light wash. It works in a college lecture hall and a high school hallway alike; our black jeans outfit ideas show what else to pair with them.

6. Knit midi dress, denim jacket and sneakers

A long-sleeve ribbed knit midi dress in rust, olive or charcoal, a mid-wash denim jacket and white sneakers, with a crossbody bag if you want your hands free. The knit stays comfortable through hours of sitting, and the denim jacket keeps it from looking dressy. It's also a strong choice for picture day, since a solid color photographs cleaner than a busy print, and you can preview two options on your own photo in Klodsy the night before instead of deciding in the hallway mirror.

7. Game-day outfit in school colors

A sweatshirt or long-sleeve tee in your school's main color, jeans, sneakers and one accent in the second color: a hair ribbon, a scarf, a beanie. It covers spirit days and Friday night games without buying anything new, and the sweatshirt carries straight into Monday. Homecoming week has its own set of looks for the game and the dance in our homecoming outfit ideas.

Winter Outfits for School, December to February

A winter school outfit is really two outfits: the coat you wear for the walk or the bus, and what's under it for the rest of the day. Get the under-layer right first, because that's what everyone actually sees. There are more cold-weather combinations in our winter outfit ideas for 2026.

8. Hoodie, puffer jacket and cargo pants

A plain heather-grey hoodie, a black or navy puffer, olive or black cargo pants and sneakers with some grip. The puffer comes off at the classroom door, so the hoodie is the real outfit: pick one without stretched cuffs or pilling. This is the standard high school outfit for guys once the first snow falls, and it's warm enough for a dark bus stop.

9. Long sweater, fleece-lined leggings and lug boots

A chunky knit sweater long enough to cover your hips, fleece-lined black leggings, lug-sole or snow boots and a knit scarf. The sweater length does two jobs: it keeps you warm in a cold classroom, and it's what many dress codes ask for when leggings are worn. This is the cozy pick for the coldest week of the semester, and what to wear with leggings has more pairings once the snow melts.

10. Cable-knit sweater over a collared shirt with chinos

A cream or navy cable-knit crewneck with an oxford shirt collar showing at the neck, tan or grey chinos, wool socks and brown loafers or leather sneakers. Let the shirt hem show evenly below the sweater, or tuck it in completely; half in and half out looks like you got dressed in the dark. It's the answer for schools with a collared-shirt rule, and the same outfit handles a college presentation or an interview for a weekend job.

11. Long wool coat over a hoodie

A long camel or charcoal coat, a plain hoodie underneath, straight trousers or dark jeans and clean sneakers. Pull the hood out so it lies flat over the coat collar rather than bunching at your neck. It's the walk-across-campus look for college in January: warm, neat from a distance, and relaxed once the coat is off.

12. Waffle thermal, overshirt and corduroys

An oatmeal waffle-knit thermal, an olive or brown wool-blend overshirt worn open, brown or navy corduroy pants, suede or leather boots, and a beanie for outside. Three textures in the same earthy colors are what make it look planned rather than grabbed off the chair. It suits guys and girls equally, and every piece also works with jeans on the days the corduroys are in the wash.

Dress-Code Basics: Three Checks Before You Leave

Every handbook is different, but the same few things get flagged.

Rules vary by district and even by building, so your school's handbook is the final word. The same short list shows up in most of them: bare midriffs, skirts or shorts that are too short, very thin straps, hats or hoods indoors, clothing with offensive words or images, pajama pants and slippers, and open-toe shoes in labs or gym. Three quick checks in front of the mirror catch most of it:

  • Arms up. Raise both hands over your head. If your stomach shows, add a longer layer or a tank underneath.
  • Fingertips. Stand with your arms relaxed at your sides. A skirt or pair of shorts that ends past your fingertips passes most codes.
  • Sit down. Sit on the edge of your bed for a minute. If the outfit rides up, pinches or needs tugging, it'll do the same thing all day.

The rule: if you'd be adjusting the outfit at 2 p.m., change it at 7 a.m.

Shoes get their own line. Slides and clogs are fine at plenty of schools and banned at others, and either way they're a bad match for gym, science labs or a slushy parking lot, so keep a pair of sneakers in your locker or bag. Planning five of these outfits on Sunday night beats choosing one at 6:45 on Monday morning. Try Klodsy to build the week from what's already in your closet.
