What to wear to a work Christmas party comes down to two things: where it's held, and who'll be standing next to you with a drink. Get the venue right, add one festive piece, and you'll look fine in the group photo that ends up on the company intranet on Monday.

The Venue Rule: Four Settings, Four Dress Codes

The word "party" on the invite tells you almost nothing. The time and the place tell you nearly everything, so start there.

If the invite gives no dress code, read the clock. Before 5 p.m. inside the office is the first row; after 7 p.m. anywhere with tablecloths is the third. The simplest check is asking someone who went last year what people actually wore, which is a normal question and not an admission that you're nervous.

Going Straight From Your Desk: The Three-Piece Swap

For the party that starts at 5:30 and you're in meetings until 5.

After-work drinks are the most common version of the work Christmas party, and the hardest to dress for, because the same outfit has to work at 9 a.m. and at 7 p.m. The fix is choosing the morning outfit with the evening in mind, then changing three things.

1. Wear the base all day: black or navy tailored trousers or a midi skirt, and a blazer. These stay on.
2. Swap the top. A cotton shirt comes off; a satin blouse, a lurex knit or a silk cami goes on under the same blazer. Burgundy, forest green and black all work.
3. Swap the shoes and earrings. Flats or loafers go in the drawer, and heeled boots or a pointed slingback come out, along with gold drops or one bold earring instead of studs.

How Festive Is Festive Enough at Work

The colors that say Christmas without shouting are burgundy, forest green, deep red, navy and black, with gold or silver jewelry. The fabrics that do the same job are velvet, satin, lurex knits and a little sequin used in one place. Any one of these turns a work outfit into a party outfit.

Where people go wrong is stacking them. A velvet blazer is festive. A velvet blazer with a sequin top, reindeer earrings and a red-and-green scarf is a costume, and at a work event a costume gets remembered longer than a nice outfit does.

The one-piece rule: one festive thing (a velvet blazer, a satin top, a red lip, gold earrings) looks right in front of colleagues; three at once starts to look like fancy dress.

For an evening venue, the most reliable outfits are a velvet or crepe midi dress with sleeves and sheer tights, a satin jumpsuit with a blazer, or wide-leg trousers with a silk blouse. All three let you sit through dinner, stand for two hours of mingling, and talk to the CEO without adjusting anything.

What's Too Much in Front of Colleagues

A work Christmas party is still a room full of people who write your reviews, sit next to you on Monday and share photos in the team chat. Two quick tests handle most doubts: would you be comfortable if this photo went into the company newsletter, and can you hug your manager goodbye without holding the neckline?

Too much, for most workplaces:

• Two revealing details at once: a short hem and a deep neckline together, or backless and sheer. One reads as a choice; two become the topic.
• Costume pieces such as antlers, Santa hats and light-up earrings, unless the invite asks for them.
• Full sequins at a lunch or in-office party, where everyone else is in their work clothes.
• A heel you can't stand in for two hours. Work parties are mostly standing and talking.
• Strong perfume in a small room with people you'll see tomorrow.

Too little is the other mistake. Showing up to a hotel dinner in exactly what you wore to the office that day looks like the party slipped your mind, and so do gym clothes, the office fleece and a laptop backpack. Jeans are fine at an office lunch or casual drinks if your workplace wears them every day; keep them dark and add a dressy top. For an evening venue, leave them at home.

What Men Should Wear to a Work Christmas Party

The same four settings apply, and the step between each one is smaller than it looks.

• Office lunch or in-office party: your normal work outfit, with a knit in burgundy or forest green over the shirt, or a festive-colored tie if you usually wear one. Not the novelty tie with a battery pack.
• After-work drinks: keep the trousers and leather shoes, lose the tie, and swap the quarter-zip for a navy blazer or a merino roll-neck. The quarter-zip and chinos combination is fine at the desk and looks like you came straight from a meeting at the bar.
• Evening venue: a navy or charcoal suit with an open-collar shirt or a black roll-neck, or a velvet blazer in navy or bottle green with dark wool trousers. Black or dark brown leather shoes, freshly polished.

Themed, Daytime and Summer Work Parties

Not every work Christmas party is dinner or drinks. A few common variations:

• Ugly sweater day: wear the sweater with your usual work trousers, not jeans and sneakers, and check the sweater for jokes you wouldn't say out loud to HR. Some novelty knits have them.
• Activity parties at a bowling alley, an escape room or a Topgolf-style driving range: dark jeans or chinos, a festive knit, flat shoes you can move in, and socks you don't mind showing when rental shoes come out.
